Motorhome Classes: Explained

Looking to buy a used or new class A, B, or C motorhome but unsure of the differences between them all? We understand. Buying an RV is a big decision, so it’s important that you’re aware of the classes of motorhomes offered at our shop. For starters, class A, B and C only applies to motorized RVs, or motorhomes.

Class A motorhomes are built on a bus or large commercial truck chassis, whereas class B motorized RVs are basically retro-fitted vans. And when it comes to class C motorhomes, each one is built on a smaller truck or cutaway van chassis.

To help you decide which motorized RV is best for you, here’s a quick guide to class A, B, and C RVs.

Class A Motorhomes for Amenities

Class A motorhomes, also known as “the big boys,” are the largest available. These RVs are constructed on a particularly durable commercial bus or truck chassis, similar to that of an 18-wheeler.

You can make the most of your indoor living space while traveling thanks to the design of this RV, which is largely centered on comfort. The amenities, however, are what truly distinguish a class A motorhome. The majority of class A RVs, like the Holiday Rambler Armada, are equipped with all the necessities for life on the road. Some standard amenities include:

  • Multiple sleeping areas
  • Full bathroom
  • Full kitchen
  • Entertainment (TVs, speaker systems, etc.)
  • Heating/cooling
  • Plenty of storage space
  • Plus more!

Class B Motorhomes for Easy Maneuvering

Also known as a camper van, the main advantage of a class B RV is that they are easy to maneuver, drive, and park. Since these RVs are smaller in size, they come with less amenities. However, don’t let that discourage you! Just keep in mind that class B motorhomes are great for 1-2 people who are looking to go on a short road trip.

Although amenities vary greatly from model to model, most class B RVs, like the Thor Motor Coach Tellaro come with amenities such as:

  • Gear storage
  • LED lighting throughout
  • A bed
  • Kitchenette
  • Seating arrangements
  • And more!

There are also Class B diesels, like the Midwest Automotive Designs Daycruiser 144 Plan B, as well as B+ RVs, like the Thor Motor Coach Gemini. Class B diesels are what the same suggests—an RV with a diesel engine. And class B+ motorhomes are bigger, wider, and taller, with an extension over the cab, and with one or more slides.

Class C Motorhomes for Classic RV Shape

Class C motorhomes, like the Thor Motor Coach Four Winds, are smaller than a class A RV but larger than a class B. Since they have the classic RV shape with overhanging sleeping quarters over the main cabin of the vehicle, class C motorhomes are what most people envision when they think of an RV.

Like class A RVs, class C models come equipped with many amenities. While they may not necessarily be as fancy as a class A model, class C RVs come with everything you and your family needs to live life on the road, such as:

  • Multiple sleeping areas
  • Plenty of storage space
  • Various seating arrangements
  • Full Kitchen
  • LED lighting throughout
  • Full bath
  • And more!
